U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.41%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Technology, Financials and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.41%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.93%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.53%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 1.65% or 2.43 points to trade at 149.70 at the close. Meanwhile, Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 1.43% or 2.18 points to end at 154.22 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 1.04% or 1.18 points to 114.74 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which fell 3.28% or 0.77 points to trade at 22.69 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 2.91% or 6.79 points to end at 226.21 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was down 2.23% or 9.61 points to 420.69.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Paychex Inc (NASDAQ:PAYX) which rose 4.92% to 140.79, APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) which was up 4.91% to settle at 25.66 and ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) which gained 3.88% to close at 109.37.

The worst performers were Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which was down 90.26% to 40.55 in late trade, Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) which lost 11.77% to settle at 279.45 and Etsy Inc (NASDAQ:ETSY) which was down 5.82% to 52.30 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Brainstorm Cell Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BCLI) which rose 1,313.04% to 3.25, Paranovus Entertainment Technology Ltd (NASDAQ:PAVS) which was up 92.93% to settle at 0.93 and Jowell Global Ltd. (NASDAQ:JWEL) which gained 41.11% to close at 2.54.

The worst performers were Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which was down 90.26% to 40.55 in late trade, Gritstone Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:GRTS) which lost 62.07% to settle at 0.22 and Applied DNA Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:APDN) which was down 47.08% to 0.34 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1713 to 1105 and 79 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2421 fell and 882 advanced, while 99 ended unchanged.

Shares in Paychex Inc (NASDAQ:PAYX) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 4.92% or 6.60 to 140.79. Shares in Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) fell to 3-years lows; falling 11.77% or 37.29 to 279.45. Shares in Gritstone Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:GRTS) fell to all time lows; down 62.07% or 0.36 to 0.22. Shares in Applied DNA Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:APDN) fell to all time lows; down 47.08% or 0.31 to 0.34.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 15.12% to 19.26.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.82% or 21.75 to $2,681.15 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 3.74% or 2.55 to hit $70.72 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 3.74% or 2.68 to trade at $74.38 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.61% to 1.11, while USD/JPY fell 0.02% to 143.59.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.44% at 100.96.
